What is it?
Meningococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis.
It can cause:
- Meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord)
- Septicemia (blood infection)
How does it spread?
- Coughing or sneezing
- Sharing utensils, water bottles etc.
- Close and prolonged contact, especially in hostels and dormitories
- Close living in crowded conditions
Watch for these symptoms:
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache
- Neck stiffness
- Vomiting
- Sensitivity to light
- Drowsiness or confusion
- Seizures
- Reddish-purple rash that does not fade when pressed
- Cold hands and feet or signs of shock (in severe cases)
Any person with these symptoms should be referred immediately to the nearest health facility
Prevention:
- Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
- Wash hands regularly
- Avoid sharing personal items
- Keep rooms well ventilated
- Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms develop
Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can save lives.
