The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on August 15, 2026.

Metsubo Jamir, Minister for Rural Development (RD) and State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Government of Nagaland, graced the occasion as Special Guest. Upon his arrival, the National Song was played, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and Rashtriya Salute. The National Anthem was then sung, after which the Minister delivered the Independence Day address.

To mark the occasion, the Minister presented District Commendation Awards to nine individuals in recognition of their dedication, achievements, innovation, leadership and service to Mokokchung district and its people.

The march past was commanded by Zareni Yanthan, NPS, Assistant Commandant, 2nd NAP Battalion, Alichen, with ABI Tekatemjen, SM, RHQ Mokokchung, as second-in-command. The 12th Assam Rifles Band provided the musical accompaniment for 11 contingents representing security forces, educational institutions, NCC, Scouts and Guides, Home Guards and ex-servicemen.

The programme also featured exhibition stalls inaugurated by the Special Guest, along with cultural performances by Mangmetong Cultural Club, Gorkha Union Mokokchung and Longtrok Senden Ungma.

An exhibition football match between DC XI and SP XI, followed by a penalty shootout, was held in the evening. The celebrations concluded with the traditional Beating of the Retreat ceremony.
