The District Administration, Kohima, organised a programme on August 21 to present Certificates of Appreciation to NGOs and civil society organisations (CSOs) in recognition of their philanthropic activities during the 80th Independence Day celebration.
Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, NCS, appreciated the organisations for their compassionate service to vulnerable and disadvantaged sections. He said Independence Day was not only a celebration of political freedom but also an occasion to reflect on citizens’ responsibilities and the vision of the freedom fighters for a society based on dignity, justice and opportunity.
“Service to the vulnerable is also service to the nation,” Buchem said, stressing that the spirit of Seva reflects citizenship, solidarity and shared responsibility. He urged the organisations to coordinate with the district administration and promote convergence between government schemes and community initiatives, with continued attention to vulnerable groups.
Angami Public Organisation president Thejao Vihienuo said true kindness lies in doing something good for someone who cannot return the favour. He appreciated organisations supporting homes and institutions serving the less privileged, noting that even small gestures can leave lasting impressions.
Representatives of Kohima Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Nagaland Contractors’ and Suppliers’ Union and Classic Club shared their experiences of philanthropic activities, stressing inclusion and community support.
Kohima Press Club representative Rita Krocha highlighted the role of civil society and media in amplifying the voices of vulnerable sections. Recalling the community response during the COVID-19 pandemic, she said communities had come together by sharing agricultural produce and supporting families in need.
She also highlighted the Kohima Press Club’s tradition of visiting institutions on Independence Day, including its recent visit to Kripa Foundation, and called for community service to extend beyond Kohima.
Certificates were presented to participating organisations. The programme was chaired by Er. Seyiekhrietuo Solo, NCS, SDO (Civil), Kohima, while Additional Deputy Commissioner Ruopfukuotuo Noudi delivered the vote of thanks.
