The School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised a one-day awareness programme on “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Agricultural Careers” on August 22 under the ICAR Tribal Sub Plan.
The programme was coordinated by Prof. Akali Sema, with Dr Mary N. Odyuo as Principal Investigator and Dr Debika Nongmaithem and Dr Sentirenla as Co-Principal Investigators. Facilitated by Damaso Digital Solutions Pvt. Ltd., the programme familiarised students with the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture and emerging career opportunities.
Sessions covered applications including crop and disease monitoring, precision farming, smart irrigation, drones, soil analysis, yield prediction, market intelligence and supply chain management. Participants were also introduced to machine learning, generative AI, computer vision, predictive analytics, AI automation and agentic AI.
The programme highlighted emerging career areas such as precision agriculture, agricultural data analysis, remote sensing and GIS, drone mapping, AgriTech product development, digital advisory services and AI-enabled agricultural extension.
Students were encouraged to develop critical thinking, communication, adaptability, ethics and leadership alongside technical skills. An interactive activity allowed participants to envision a future farm integrating AI, robotics, drones, data analytics and smart water management.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on becoming “AI ready” while retaining domain knowledge and human judgement in decision-making.
