Two teachers were honoured with the School Safety Excellence Awards during the State-level Teachers’ Day celebration for strengthening disaster preparedness through regular drills and practical demonstrations.
The awards were presented by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Department of School Education (DoSE) and NagaEd. The recipients were Nukshitemjen, Physical Training Teacher at Government High School, Kubolong, Mokokchung, and Wanglem W. Konyak, Primary Teacher and Scout Master at Holy Angel’s School, Tizit Town, Mon.
NSDMA Joint CEO Dr Johnny Ruangmei said, “Preparedness is decided in the schoolyard, by teachers who make safety part of everyday school life.”
Nukshitemjen has supported awareness programmes and practical demonstrations at his school, which participated in Phase 1 of the School Safety Policy Compliance Course in 2024. At Holy Angel’s School, Wanglem led whole-school earthquake mock drills covering drop, cover and hold, evacuation, first aid and assembly at a designated safe zone.
Launched in December 2023, the Nagaland Disaster Management School Safety Policy Compliance Course supports implementation of school safety requirements aligned with national guidelines. Nearly 12,000 teachers have registered across its first two phases, with about half already certified.
NagaEd Founder Kevisato Sanyü said the initiative seeks to make preparedness “a regular part of school life rather than a one-time training requirement.”
The School Safety Excellence Awards have recognised teachers from 10 schools since 2024.
