Metseruyi Tetseo, Vocational Trainer/Senior Instructor with Lend A Hand India (LAHI), Kohima, recently visited WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 in Shanghai, China, gaining exposure to international practices in vocational education, technical training and skill development.

Held from September 22 to 27 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, the 48th WorldSkills Competition brought together 1,385 competitors from 68 countries and regions across 64 skill competitions. Tetseo was part of a group of LAHI colleagues who travelled to Shanghai to witness the competition and gain insights into global approaches to skills training.
During the visit, Tetseo observed competitions in areas including CNC Milling, Carpentry, Plumbing and Heating, Water Technology, Chemical Laboratory Technology and Robotics. The exposure provided insights into the use of modern equipment, precision work, automation and digital technologies, as well as the growing role of Industry 4.0 in vocational education and workplaces.
The experience highlighted the importance of strengthening hands-on learning among students, with emphasis on precision, safety, problem-solving, quality standards, time management and independent practical work. It also offered insights into adapting international approaches to the local context of vocational education in Nagaland, including settings where access to advanced equipment may be limited.
The visit also included cultural and historical exposure to Shanghai. Tetseo and the group visited prominent sites including The Bund and Yu Garden, as well as historic parts of the city, while also observing its modern commercial and technological districts. The experience provided a broader understanding of China’s culture, history, architecture and rapid urban development.
The combination of technical, cultural and historical exposure offered a wider perspective on the relationship between skills, technology, culture and innovation in individual and community development.
The experience is expected to contribute to efforts to promote practical, skill-based learning among young people in Nagaland, with emphasis on effective teaching methods, structured practical activities and opportunities for students to develop confidence and professional skills.
