More than 150 young volunteers descended on the main street of Mokokchung town on Saturday morning on a cleanliness drive that is expected to send a strong message to the community.
The volunteers, braving the inclement weather, were from Marepkong Youth Association who cleaned the town square before collecting all litter along the whole stretch of the road from Police Point to Marepkong Ward, covering a distance of about 3 kms.
The MYA volunteers also segregated the wastes they collected. Plastics and metal wastes were deposited at the MMC Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
Earlier in the morning, before the drive began, the volunteers assembled at Marepkong Ward Community Hall where Temsuchuba Jamir, SDO (C), Mokokchung, exhorted the volunteers and asserted the importance of keeping the town clean and sensitizing the citizens of Mokokchung. “Cleanliness is all about awareness,” he added. He further appreciated the Association for the efforts made by organizing the exemplary social service.
Toshikaba, chairman, Marepkong Ward, further advised the participants to be sincere and careful while carrying out the said cleanliness drive.
The organizers said that the objective of the initiative was to create awareness of “living clean not only in body but also the surroundings where we live.”
The Association further urged the citizens of Mokokchung to work hand in hand to maintain cleanliness in the town.
S. Mar Aier, Pastor, MBC invoked God’s blessings before the participants headed out for the social service.
