The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) organized a candlelight service at the Mokokchung town square on 17 March in honor of the life and legacy of Dr T Senkalong Yaden, a renowned scientist and inspiration to the community. The service, attended by students, civil society organizations, and citizens from all walks of life, celebrated Dr Yaden’s contributions to science and society.

Dr Yaden, known as the “American Man of Science,” passed away on 14 March 2025, leaving behind a legacy of scientific achievements and a community that deeply respected and admired him. The candlelight service was marked by speeches reflecting on Dr Yaden’s life, work, and impact on the community.

The President of AKM, Lanutoshi Aier, shared a memory of Dr Yaden’s involvement with the organization, highlighting a pledge he made during its golden jubilee in 1979. Dr Yaden had also donated $100 to the students’ conference.

Stating that Dr Yaden’s achievements were innumerable, Aier highlighted some of his accomplishments. He said that Dr Yaden earned more than 40 national and international accolades, taught at 11 universities, had his works published in more than 18 journals, and co-authored over 10 research papers.

Imtipokyim Longkumer, General Secretary of Ao Senden, and Dr R Zulu Jamir, Associate Pastor of Kumlong Baptist Arogo, paid tribute to Dr Yaden’s exceptional knowledge and wisdom.

The Merangkong Medemsanger Putu also eulogized Dr Yaden and expressed gratitude to AKM for holding the service in tribute to Dr Yaden, a son of Merangkong village.

Dr Yaden’s legacy extends beyond his scientific achievements. He was a leader who started the Naga American Foundation and remained deeply connected to his roots, always cherishing the traditional food of his native place.

The proceedings of the candlelight vigil were led by Imlinok, President of Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang, while the General Secretary of Wats Mungdang, Sungtireben, pronounced the invocation prayer.

Naga American Foundation mourns
The Naga American Foundation (NAF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr Senkalong Yaden, who passed away on March 14, 2025, in Tyler, Texas.

A pioneering figure in the Naga community in the United States, Dr Yaden served as the first president of NAF from 1988 to 1992 and played a crucial role in shaping the foundation’s mission.

“We honor his life and legacy as a pioneer of the Naga community in the United States and as the NAF’s first president, serving from 1988 to 1992. Dr Yaden, along with his wife, Theola Thedford, graciously hosted the 1994 NAF gathering in Texas,” the NAF said in a statement.

NAF said that his leadership and vision laid the groundwork for NAF’s cultural, educational, and charitable initiatives aimed at supporting Nagas in America.

NAF remembered Dr Yaden not only as a leader but also as a mentor and friend who was widely respected for his kindness and humility, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

NAF further said that Dr Yaden’s significant academic achievements led to him being known as the “Man of Science” in wider Naga circles, encouraging Naga youth to participate in and contribute to the sciences.

“We are forever grateful for Dr Yaden’s exemplary life and the many ways he enriched the Naga American community. We extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to his wife and family during this trying time,” the NAF conveyed.
