Education without practical use is futile: Metsubo
Nagaland Minister for Rural Development & SIRD, Metsubo Jamir, on Thursday said the purpose of attaining knowledge and education for a student today should not be a futile exercise but rather be utilized practically. Speaking as the chief guest on Day-2 of the Asangma Shisashir Telongjem (AST) Platinum Jubilee celebration held at Asangma village under Mokokchung district on December 19, he advised the student community to strive to become leaders in their own capacity.
“The life of a student today is extremely competitive,” he said, “be it in the field of academics, sports, or other related activities.” Keeping this in mind, Jamir urged the students to always strive for excellence and be passionate about achieving their goals.
In the development of a youth, and most importantly a student, he noted that leadership skills need to be inculcated at this stage of life. “In a few years’ time, you will be the ones leading your community and society,” he reminded.
Adding further, he said, “You have a lot of responsibilities ahead, on how to help carry forth your village, community, and state.” This, he clarified, does not mean adopting a tribalistic mindset but rather being fair, unprejudiced, and living in harmony with others. As such, Jamir urged the students to have a vision for the future and seek wisdom and understanding from their elders.
He also advised the students not to merely seek a job as a means of survival but to have ambitions for what they can give back to their society.
The Minister extended his greetings and appreciation to the AST and its pioneers for marking 75 years of formation as a well-established student body.
Considering the occasion as a day of remembering the blessings bestowed upon them, he announced that he would contribute funds toward the redevelopment of the village’s old football ground and assist in sponsoring free coaching classes for the students.
Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, A. Pangjung Jamir, was also in attendance as the Jubilee host. The Advisor had earlier graced the occasion as the inaugural guest of the Jubilee celebration on Wednesday night.
The presidential address was given by Moalong Lemtur, AST President, while a short message was shared by I. Kilang Jamir, Chairman of Asangma Village Council. Speeches were also delivered by Lanutoshi Aier, President of Ao Kaketshi Mungdang (students conference), and Imlinok, President of Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang.
Established in 1949, the AST Platinum Jubilee celebration is being held from December 18–20.
