Mokokchung, 7 September (MTNews): Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Kobulong Block, Mokokchung organized ‘Kisan Gosthi’ at Sungratsu village on 6 September with an objective to create awareness and provide technical know-how to the farmers on Integrated Pest Management in Cereal Crop.

The farmers were enlightened about the concept of Kisan Gosthi by C Amongla Jamir, Block Technology Manager (BTM), ATMA during the event. Resource person Samuel, Assistant Chief Technical Officer (Agronomy) KVK, Tuensang said that for as long as agriculture has existed, farmers have had to stay ahead of pests in order to “put food on our tables.” It becomes necessary to look for new and better ways to combat pests with practices that balance growing quality crops and taking good care of the land, he said.

 

He spoke in detail on the components of Integrated Pest Management like identifying pests’ threats, monitoring and measuring against thresholds, cultural practices, mechanical methods, biological controls and pesticides. The resource person educated the farmers on the use of pheromone traps, Neem oil, and cow urine solution to control certain pests. Further, use of fermented paste made up of rotten crab and rotten frog against gundhi bug was also mentioned.

 

Later during the discussion, problems of corn borer in colocassia and rice blast were shared by the farmers to which its managemental practice was enlightened by the resource person.
At the end, neemoil was distributed to all the participating farmers. A total of 21 farmers attended the program.

 

Value Addition of Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables

Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Kobulong Block, Mokokchung also conducted a capacity building program on “Value Addition of Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables” for Commodity interest groups (CIGs) at Alongchen compound on 6 September. The resource person, Toshirenla T Longkumer, ATM educated the attendees on the step-by-step procedures to prepare chilli pickle, bitter eggplant pickle and mango jam where all the trainees actively participated in the preparation process. Importance of the use of preservatives, bottling, packaging and labeling were also briefed.

The purpose of the training was to reduce post-harvest losses, to improve the profitability of farmers and to empower women farmers through gainful employment opportunities.
Altogether 13 farmers attended the program. Inputs like packaging pouches and glass jars were distributed to the participants.
