Mokokchung, March 15 (MTNews): The All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) has resolved not to allow municipal election in Mokokchung Town unless sections of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 that infringes on rights given under Article 371A are deleted as demanded by the Association of Kohima Municipal Ward Panchayat (AKMWP), Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) and AWUMT. This was resolved at a joint meeting of AWUMT on 15 March represented by all the 18 wards.
The meeting further resolved not to allow anyone in the 18 wards of Mokokchung Town to file nomination if the State Government decides to hold the ULB election without necessary amendment as demanded.
The AWUMT adopted the resolutions based on its joint representation submitted to the state government along with AKMWP and DUCCF to hold ULB elections at the earliest after amending the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001.
Sumi organizations for complete deletion of Section 120(1) (a)
The Sumi Hoho and Sumi frontal organisations have demanded the state government to amend certain portions of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 before holding the scheduled ULB election.
In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister, the Sumi civil society organizations stated that it had resolved during a consultative meeting held in Zunheboto on 14 March to “boycott the ULB election in Zunheboto district in toto” till the state government completely deletes Section 120 (1) (a) of the Nagaland Municipal Act pertaining to “Taxation on lands and buildings” which it said infringes Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of India.
While accepting the 33% reservation of seats for women in the ULBs, it was stated that “reservation of office of the chairperson for women is a deprivation to the rightful candidate.”
The Sumi Hoho requested the state government to amend it and allow the elected candidates democratically choose a rightful person, be it man or woman, for the post of Chairperson.
