Tensions have erupted along the Assam-Nagaland border in Tizit, Mon district, after Assam Police allegedly detained a Naga youth early Monday morning.
According to local sources in Tizit, the incident occurred around 6:00 AM when Assam Police reportedly apprehended a Naga youth from the border area. The alleged detention has triggered unrest, with residents from both sides pelting stones at each other near the border.
Local authorities have since imposed restrictions, sealing both entry and exit points along the border. The standoff remains tense, with Tizit residents demanding the individual’s release by 10:00 AM on May 6.
Some sources have linked the rising tensions to recent administrative changes in Assam. “People are accusing the Sonari (Charaideo) Additional SP of exercising excessive power after he got posted at Sonari. More such incidents are believed to have taken place since his posting,” said the source. However, Assam Police have not issued any official statement regarding the incident or the allegations at the time of filing this report.
Due to lack of direct access, Assam Police’s version of events could not be obtained at the time of reporting.
“Multiple incidents of such cases have fueled up the public anger in Tizit,” informed a source familiar with the situation.
“We have come to learn that the arrest has been made with suspect in connection to abduction of one Muslim man who was caught by NSCN for allegedly selling drugs,” the source added.
It may be noted that just last month, military personnel took a local man from his home in Tizit between 10:30 and 10:45 PM without providing any explanation or informing the local authority. This is also the same district where the Oting tragedy took place.
The situation remains volatile, and further developments are awaited.
