A Capacity Building Program on Silviculture and Forest Management was organized by the Division in collaboration with ICFRE-RFRI, Jorhat, on August 7, 2025. The objective was to strengthen the capacity of frontline staff on forest seed technology, nursery management, silvicultural operations, and various aspects of forest management, stated Dr Sentitula IFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung.


Imotemsu Ao (IFS), Head of Silviculture and Forest Management, ICFRE, Jorhat, shared detailed procedures on tree marking, thinning, timber felling, and their impact on sustainable forest yield. He highlighted the proper use of the hammer stamp as a key accountability tool, which must be marked at the tree stump and at the Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) after felling. The session further emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of plantations carried out in accordance with departmental guidelines to ensure long-term forest sustainability.

Dr Mitali Mehta (Scientist) presented on seed technology and nursery management, providing essential inputs on seed collection, grading, and nursery techniques for raising quality saplings. She also emphasized the crucial role that well-managed nurseries play in forest regeneration efforts.

Kambam Boxen (Technical Assistant) delivered a presentation on volume estimation, focusing on the importance of accurate volume calculations in forest management. The session included explanations of standard formulas used in the field, followed by a practical demonstration conducted within the office campus to enhance understanding.

Amrita Tirkey (Junior Project Fellow) demonstrated a seed viability test using the Tetrazolium (TZ) method, offering participants a hands-on experience to assess the viability of seeds before planting. This session provided practical insights into ensuring high-quality planting material for nursery development.

The training program was attended by Range Officers and all frontline staff of the division.
