Hunting ban to continue in Centre Chakhesang jurisdiction from Oct 9
The Centre Chakhesang Youth Organisation (CCYO) has announced the second phase of its agitation against the Forest Department, with indefinite picketing scheduled to begin from 10 a.m. on October 12 at three Forest Department offices in Phek district.
According to the CCYO, the indefinite picketing will be held at the Office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Phek, and the Forest Range Offices at Phek and Pfutsero.
The organisation said its movement is aimed at seeking “justice, accountability, transparency, and due respect” for the customary rights, traditions and institutions of the Chakhesang people.
The CCYO appealed to participants and concerned citizens to maintain peace, discipline and dignity throughout the agitation. It also called upon the youths of Phek and Pfutsero towns to extend their support and participate in the movement, stating that the issues raised concern the rights, dignity, customary practices and welfare of the people of Nagaland.
Meanwhile, the CCYO announced that its ban on hunting within the jurisdiction of Centre Chakhesang will remain in force from October 9, following the conclusion of Wildlife Week on October 8.
The organisation said the decision was taken in accordance with the advice and guidance of the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) and the Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF).
However, the CCYO stated that its non-cooperation movement against the Forest Department would continue, including its position of non-operation and opposition to the enforcement of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, within its area.
The organisation said the non-cooperation movement would continue until its demands are “addressed and fulfilled.”
The CCYO reiterated its commitment to pursuing the matter peacefully and democratically and appealed to all sections of society to maintain unity, peace and public order during the agitation.
The statement was issued by CCYO general secretary Shevoto Vezuh.
