Kohima, 27 January (MTNews): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has called for thorough discussion before implementing the Centre’s decision to fence the India-Myanmar border. Speaking to reporters, Rio emphasized the need for consultation with the people of the state on this crucial issue.

Highlighting the complexities of the region, Rio stressed the necessity “to work out a formula on how to solve the issue for the people and prevent infiltration as well, because Nagaland is bordered by Myanmar, and on both sides there are Naga.”

Rio acknowledged the unique challenges posed by the border situation, where “many people live on the Indian side, their farms are on the other side.”

“Therefore there has to be a workable formula,” he added.

The stance articulated by Rio contrasts with the recent assertion made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who announced plans to restrict free movement along the India-Myanmar border and fence it akin to the boundary with Bangladesh.

Deputy CM Y Patton had earlier on Monday said that the Nagaland government will hold meetings with other northeastern states that share a border with Myanmar, and then approach the Centre on the issue.

However, Rio’s sentiments resonate with various Naga civil society groups and the NSCN-IM, who have vehemently opposed the Centre’s decision, citing fears of further division among the Naga people residing on both sides of the border.
