In the first poll following the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019, the Congress and the National Conference (NC) alliance secured a decisive victory over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections held in Kargil. Out of the 22 seats declared so far out of 26, the Congress claimed victory in eight seats, the National Conference in 11, the BJP in only two, and one seat was won by an independent candidate.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti expressed her satisfaction at seeing secular parties like the NC and the Congress triumph in Kargil. The PDP chose not to participate in the election.

Mehbooba Mufti conveyed her thoughts on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “It’s heartening to see secular parties like NC and Congress register their victory in Kargil. This marks the first election post-2019, and the people of Ladakh have spoken.”

The fifth LAHDC-Kargil election, which took place on 4 October 2023, saw a significant turnout, with 77.61% of eligible voters casting their ballots via EVMs to determine the fate of 85 candidates in the race.
