On the night of August 11, heavy rainfall triggered two major landslides on the road connecting Pungro and Mimi, near Lophukhong village in Kiphire district. This road is the sole link to the border villages of Mimi, Kaha, Betang, and Hakkumate, making it essential for the sustenance of these communities.
In response to the emergency, troops from the Kiphire Battalion of the Assam Rifles, stationed at Mimi COB, were deployed to the site with a JCB. The landslides had caused a significant accumulation of debris, including large boulders, mud, and uprooted trees, which completely blocked the roadway.
The JCB operator worked continuously to clear the debris, while the troops tackled smaller obstacles. Despite the persistent rain and the risk of further landslides, the team has successfully cleared one of the landslides, with efforts ongoing to address the second, an update received here said.
The Commandant of the Kiphire Battalion highlighted the critical importance of the road for the border villages and assured that the Assam Rifles remain dedicated to maintaining connectivity and ensuring the safety of the local population.
