Mokokchung, December 29 (MTNews): In view of an election-related violence reported at Khar Village under Mokokchung District between the supporters of two intending candidates on 28 December afternoon, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung has invoked Section 144 CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973) prohibiting the assembly of more than five persons and/or carrying of lethal weapons and firearms including lathis, dagger/machete, spears, or any other sharp and dangerous weapon in the Khar Village jurisdiction.

 

 

The prohibitory order, dated December 28, is to be enforced for 48 hours and subject to extension.

 

 

Further, the Deputy Commissioner also invoked Section 21 of the Arms Act, 1959 and directed all the arms license holders in Khar Village to deposit their firearms to the nearest police station with immediate effect.

 

 

According to reliable sources, the incident occurred around 4:00 to 5:00 PM on December 28. Police led by SDPO HQ subsequently joined by the DPO Mangkolemba who reached the spot around 6:30 – 7:00 PM to assess the situation and maintain the law and order.

 

 

It was reported that around 21 persons were injured, including 2 or 3 persons sustaining pellet injuries, while a dozen vehicles, houses and properties were damaged.
