The District Congress Committee (DCC), Kiphire, has criticised the Naga People’s Front (NPF), 60 Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency, over its recent statement on the condition of roads in Pungro, accusing the ruling party of attempting to justify poor infrastructure instead of addressing public concerns.
In a statement, the DCC said it was “deeply disappointed” by the NPF’s response, alleging that it dismissed the legitimate grievances of residents by attributing them to a lack of understanding of the “ground realities.”
The committee said the people of Pungro had endured poor road conditions for years despite repeated assurances from the government. It maintained that development should be reflected in tangible improvements rather than public statements.
Referring to the NPF’s explanation that road reconstruction had been delayed due to an ongoing land acquisition survey and assessment exercise, the DCC described the reason as “unconvincing.” It called on the government to disclose the status of the survey, the timeline for its completion, funds allocated for the project and the expected date for commencement of construction.
The DCC also noted that the NPF had acknowledged that only minor repairs had been carried out with the support of the Yimkhiung Youth Organisation, Likimro Enterprise and the Border Roads Organisation. While appreciating their efforts, it said maintenance of public infrastructure was the responsibility of the government.
Stating that constructive criticism was a constitutional right, the DCC urged the government to provide clear answers on project approvals, budget utilisation and implementation schedules. It also called on the state government to take immediate steps to restore and reconstruct the roads in Pungro.
