District administration of Wokha empowers youth with specialized fish processing training

Wokha, 23 June (MTNews): The District Administration of Wokha, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Kohima has initiated a two-day Specialized Skill Training Program on Post-Harvest Management & Processing of Fish. The program aims to empower unemployed youth in the district and strengthen FISH-One District One Product (ODOP) of Wokha, while enhancing the capacity of beneficiaries under the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME Scheme).

Commencing on 23 June at the training center in Sanis, Wokha, the two-day Skill Training Program will cover various aspects of post-harvest management, including handling, storage, packaging, value addition, and quality control of fish products. Through expert guidance and practical demonstrations by experienced trainers and resource persons from the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, participants will acquire essential skills and knowledge in post-harvest management and processing techniques specific to the fish industry.

 

This initiative aligns with the FISH-One District One Product (ODOP) of Wokha district, which aims to develop and promote specific fisheries products unique to the district. By imparting specialized skills in post-harvest management and processing, the training program seeks to enhance the market value and competitiveness of Wokha’s fish products.

 

Furthermore, this training program is in line with the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME Scheme) which focuses on strengthening the capacities of micro-level food processing units. By empowering beneficiaries under this scheme, the program aims to enhance their entrepreneurial capabilities and promote sustainable growth in the food processing sector.

 

C Dory Yanthan, District Fishery Officer (DFO), Peren emphasized the significance of this training program for Wokha district. She stated, “The Post-Harvest Management & Processing of Fish training program is a step towards strengthening the fish industry in our district. By enhancing the skills and knowledge of our youth in this sector, we aim to promote entrepreneurship, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the overall development of Wokha.”

 

Anuranjan Singh, MGNF & In-charge of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Wokha, expressed gratitude to the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Kohima, and various individuals for their valuable collaboration and support in organizing this training program. He extended appreciation to all the participants for their dedicated engagement and commitment towards improving their skills and making a positive contribution to the development of the fisheries sector in Wokha. Special thanks were also given to Kumari and Thungbeni Kikon of KI Organization for their involvement in this endeavor.
