The District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Zunheboto marked World Mental Health Day on October 8 at the District Hospital Conference Hall with a program emphasizing the importance of mental health in the workplace. The event was chaired by Ms. Khruvotolu Nyekha, a psychiatric social worker with the DMHP.
The gathering began with an invocation by Smit Tohuli, a pharmacist at the hospital, who called for divine guidance. Dr. Josia Sema, Nodal Officer of the DMHP, welcomed the attendees and highlighted the significance of the day, noting that World Mental Health Day has been celebrated since 1992.
Keynote speaker Ms. Lovitoli Awomi, a counseling psychologist and founder of the LAPIYE Centre for Mental Well-being, addressed the mental health challenges posed by anxiety and depression. She emphasized the critical distinction between types of intelligence, stating that individuals with high emotional intelligence are significantly more likely to succeed than those with only high cognitive intelligence.
Ms. Atolimi I. Khuzhumi, a clinical psychologist at DMHP, discussed the program’s ongoing efforts, revealing that 135 clients are currently receiving support in the Zunheboto District. She also highlighted outreach initiatives, including visits to five local schools aimed at raising awareness and providing mental health resources.
The program concluded with a benediction by Kasheli, a staff nurse at the district hospital, who prayed for continued support and understanding of mental health issues within the community.
This year’s theme, “It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” resonated throughout the event, underscoring the urgent need for mental well-being to be recognized as a fundamental aspect of health in all sectors.
