Women from Ao, Sümi, Lotha, Eastern Naga, Tenyimia and Gorkha communities in Mokokchung celebrated International Women’s Day in Mokokchung today, organized by the Watsü Mungdang.

 

 

The event was celebrated under the theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equity” with #EmbraceEquity in Mokokchung at Aoer Kilem, Sangtemla Ward.

 

In her speech at the “Embrace Equity” session, Sheetal Gurung, a representative of Women on Wealth, shared her experience and stressed the significance of women supporting each other. She said, “Each woman represents the possibilities of change,” urging the women in attendance to take a stand on what they considered to be extraordinary and not ordinary.

Speaking in accord with the subject “Embrace Equity,” she explained that equity refers to giving everyone an equal opportunity to succeed in life as each person faces a variety of challenges. She also stressed the importance of financial education and bemoaned the fact that women generally lack financial literacy, which she blamed on nurturers by default.

 

“If society embraces equity, then opportunities should also be provided,” Gurung said, further adding that women need to take the chances to uplift themselves.
“Success cannot be derived alone, the entire community where you stand encourages you to attain success,” she added.

 

In her welcome speech, S Arenla Longkumer, President of Watsü Mungdang, encouraged the women present to move forward inclusively, stating that the initiative was created to support young women business entrepreneurs. She expressed the opinion that it is crucial to understand where women stand in this advanced technological world and how well one is adapting to it.

 

During the event, three local entrepreneurs shared their experiences. Sentirenla Ozukum, a Ph.D. scholar from Nagaland University and owner of Sen Bakes, as well as Katinaro, a veterinarian by trade and proprietor of Anthophile Flores, and Chubalemla, owner of Berem Jewellery from Khensa Village, shared their experiences where they all had made it clear that working for themselves has given them independence and enabled them to control their finances.

 

The program was attended by tribal women organizations from Ao, Sümi, Lotha, Eastern Naga, Tenyimia and Gorkha communities.

 

 

 

After the formal program, an exhibition-cum-sale of various products from various women entrepreneurs were exhibited. The names of the entrepreneurs and brands are: Sen Bakes (Baker), Berem by Chubalem (Jeweler), Pretty Little Things (Crotchetier) , Anthophile Flores (Florist), Sweet Sensation by Asensen (Baker), Blooms on 10th (Florist) and Pastel Papers (Stationery Designer).

 

The program was hosted by Imnichetla Jamir while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Sashila Aier.
