The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has submitted a formal appeal to the Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland urging immediate implementation of the long-pending construction and upgradation of National Highway-202, which connects Kohima to Mokokchung via the Eastern districts of Nagaland.
In a memorandum addressed to the Deputy CM, ENSF stated, “It is a matter of grave concern that while similar two-lane road projects have been implemented and completed in other regions of the State, such as Kohima to Meluri stretch of NH-202, the portion connecting the Eastern districts has remained abandoned for more than a decade, despite all requisite surveys, clearances, and formalities reportedly having been completed.”
The Federation highlighted the “deplorable condition” of the road and said it has resulted in “persistent hardship for the people of Eastern Nagaland.” It added that the situation becomes “exceedingly dire during the monsoon season owing to incessant rainfall, leading to frequent mudslides and landslides that completely obstruct the route.” This, it noted, not only disrupts inter-district connectivity but also “poses a severe risk to commuters, hampers economic activities, and isolates entire communities.”
ENSF expressed concern over what it called “developmental disparities and neglect,” adding that the people of Eastern Nagaland have endured such conditions “that are far from equitable when compared to other parts of the State.”
“While we sincerely appreciate the State Government’s vision for improved connectivity and its stated commitment towards inclusive development,” the Federation said, “the continued inaction on this particular project has caused deep hardship and reinforced the sense of marginalization among the people of Eastern Nagaland.”
Citing the “Doctrine of Legitimate Expectation,” ENSF stated that the delay in the road project “undermines” public trust as people have “long anticipated the execution of this project following official surveys and policy announcements.”
The ENSF made a “humble yet strong” appeal for the “immediate commencement and completion” of the NH-202 two-lane construction work in the Eastern sector “without further delay.”
The memorandum was jointly signed by ENSF President Nuheymong Yimkhiung and Secretary General James Konyak, dated July 15, 2025.
