Arunachal Pradesh inaugurates first commercial coal mine at Namchik Namphuk, Changlang
Arunachal Pradesh marked a major industrial milestone on Monday with the inauguration of the state’s first commercial coal mine at Namchik Namphuk in Changlang district. The mine was jointly inaugurated by Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy and Chief Minister Pema Khandu, an event reported by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The launch is being hailed as a significant step towards energy security, economic growth, and resource development in the Northeast.
Speaking at the inauguration, Reddy said that exploration of critical minerals in the Northeast is among the government’s top priorities. He noted that ongoing coal-based activities in Assam will soon be expanded to Mizoram and other neighbouring states.
“The Northeast holds immense potential. Along with coal, there are reserves of critical minerals that are essential for our country’s technological and economic growth. Exploring these will help create jobs, strengthen local economies and contribute to national energy security,” the minister said.
Critical minerals are vital for modern industries including renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure. Reddy added that identifying and developing these reserves could position the Northeast as a major contributor to India’s future-ready economy.
Reddy described the launch as a symbol of trust, transparency and transformation, saying the project would bring sustainable and scientific mining practices to the region.
“This is not just a mining project but a sign of new hope for Arunachal Pradesh. The government is committed to responsible development that benefits local communities,” he said.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the mine would play a key role in industrialising the state and generating employment for its youth.
“This initiative will boost our revenue and help us develop skills and infrastructure while offering long-term opportunities for our young population. It puts Arunachal Pradesh on India’s economic map in a new way,” Khandu said.
The Namchik Namphuk coal block, with estimated reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes, was first allocated in 2003 but remained stalled for years due to various challenges. It was revived through a transparent auction in 2022, paving the way for private sector participation.
According to the Ministry of Coal, the mine developed by the Mahalaxmi Group is projected to generate over Rs 100 crore in annual revenue for the Arunachal Pradesh government and create significant employment in the Changlang region. Over its lifetime, it could contribute around Rs 4,500 crore to the state’s exchequer.
