Mokokchung PS-II books accused under IT Act Sections 66 & 67A; cyber tracking leads to arrest

A youth from Tuliyong ward, Tuli, was arrested in connection with a Facebook impersonation case involving the solicitation of obscene photographs from women. Mokokchung PS-II registered the case under Sections 66 and 67A of the Information Technology Act following a complaint by a resident of Aongza ward, who reported that an unknown person had created a fake Facebook account in his name and sent inappropriate messages to his friends. MT has been closely tracking the investigation, taking regular updates from police as the case progressed.

Police said the complainant does not operate any Facebook account and became aware of the fake profile through one of his friends.

During the investigation, police obtained details from Meta Platforms, which revealed that the account had been authenticated using a specific mobile number. Analysis of call records and tower location data led investigators to Tuli.

On February 16, the team traced the mobile number to a household in Tuliyong ward. The phone was found to be used by family members, and further inquiry identified a youth suspected of operating the fake account.

The accused admitted to accessing a Facebook account linked to his cousin, uploading a random photograph resembling the complainant, and sending messages through Messenger requesting intimate photographs from women. He also shared his own obscene images.

The youth surrendered at PS-II Mokokchung on February 18 and was formally arrested under Sections 66 and 67A of the IT Act. He has been forwarded to the court with a prayer for 15 days’ judicial remand. The seized mobile phone has been sent for forensic examination.
