Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, observed World Rabies Day with an awareness programme on September 28, focusing on rabies prevention, responsible animal care and the importance of immediate medical attention following animal exposure.
The programme, held under the theme “Stronger Together”, featured Dr Imtilong Longkumer, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Mokokchung, as the resource person.
Dr Longkumer spoke on the fatal nature of rabies once clinical symptoms develop and stressed the importance of seeking medical attention immediately after an animal bite or other possible exposure. He also highlighted timely vaccination and appropriate post-exposure measures, while addressing common misconceptions about rabies transmission and prevention.
He emphasised the need for greater awareness and sensitisation, particularly among elders and older members of the community, and called for responsible behaviour towards animals.
Vice Principal L.S. Vinod Kumar highlighted the public health implications of rabies and the importance of community participation. Referring to Supreme Court directives concerning rabies awareness and the control and management of street dogs, he stressed the need for informed and humane approaches.
The programme was chaired by Yimdangjungla, B.A. 3rd Semester, and began with an invocation prayer by Alia, B.A. 5th Semester. It concluded with participants being encouraged to promote sustained awareness and collective responsibility in preventing rabies.
