Moatsü, one of the premier festivals of the Ao Naga community, has been celebrated with cultural reverence and festivity across Mokokchung. Observed annually after the completion of sowing, the spring festival is traditionally associated with thanksgiving and prayers for a bountiful harvest, and is marked by folk songs, traditional dances and community feasting. It is now commonly celebrated from May 1 to 3.
The Naga People’s Front (NPF) Mokokchung division observed the festival at its office premises on Friday, with Metsubo Jamir, Minister for RD and SIRD, attending as the special guest. Jamir, who is also the minister in-charge of Mokokchung district, addressed party workers and called for unity and resilience.
He urged members to “remain united and stand strong” in order to face challenges, while describing the occasion as significant for the party. He said the celebration was a “blessing” for the NPF, noting that it is the first Moatsü observed following the merger between NDPP and NPF.
The minister further stressed the need to strengthen the party and work at the grassroots level. He also called for greater mobilisation to reinforce the organisation and appreciated the efforts of organisers in hosting the event. He expressed hope that the celebration would continue in the coming years.
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Repameren Yaden, President, NPF Mokokchung division. Cultural songs were presented by the parent body and the women wing. Moatsü greetings were shared by N. Bendang Jamir, Lanukaba and Meitiba Lkr. The programme concluded with a community feast.
