Kulungshi Newmai, son of Late Human Newmai and Naro Newmai from Ntu Village under Peren District, Nagaland, is steadily carving a name for himself in the world of martial arts. With remarkable dedication, discipline, and perseverance, he has emerged as one of the promising sporting talents from the state, bringing pride to Nagaland and the nation.
Recently, Kulungshi represented India (Nagaland) at the 5th India Open International Kickboxing Cup, hosted by WOKA India in New Delhi from 4th to 8th February 2026. Competing against top athletes from different regions, he delivered an outstanding performance and secured a silver medal, adding yet another achievement to his growing list of accolades.
His journey in kickboxing has been marked by consistent success. He is the ISKA National Kickboxing Champion, having clinched the title at the national championship held in Kolkata from 18th to 21st November 2025.
Further strengthening his credentials, he became the ISKA Open International Kickboxing Championship Belt Holder (Straw Weight category) during the championship held in Kolkata from 23rd to 25th January 2026. Owing to his exceptional performance, he has now been selected to represent India at the upcoming World Championship to be held in Spain a significant milestone in his sporting career.
Apart from kickboxing, Kulungshi is also a Black Belt (Second Degree) in ITF Taekwondo and the current State Champion. His versatility extends to other combat sports as well; he is a silver medalist in the Wushu Sanda State Championship. In addition, he represented Nagaland University at the All-India University Games 2025 in Bengaluru in the sport of Pencak Silat, showcasing his all-round martial arts excellence at the national university level.
Academically, Kulungshi completed his Bachelor’s degree with History as his major from Tetso College, Chümoukedima. Balancing academics and sports, he proved that determination and time management can lead to success in multiple fields.
An important pillar in his journey has been his involvement in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). As a cadet of Tetso College under the 24th Battalion NCC, he successfully completed his ‘C’ Certificate examination with Grade ‘A’. He credits NCC for instilling discipline, leadership, and perseverance qualities that continue to guide him in his martial arts career.
From a small village in Peren District to international arenas, Kulungshi Newmai’s journey is a testament to hard work and unwavering commitment. As he prepares to represent India at the World Championship in Spain, he carries not only his dreams but also the hopes and pride of Nagaland.
