The Gauhati High Court’s Kohima Bench recently disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Chingai Nyamto Wangsha and Dr. Lemwang Chuwanglim, which sought relief for various issues plaguing Government Middle Schools (GMS) in Mon Town, Nagaland.
According to India Legal, the petitioners raised concerns over the appointment of science and mathematics teachers, the renovation of school buildings, the construction of boundary fencing, and the provision of libraries, hostels, clean drinking water, and computer facilities.
In response, the State of Nagaland submitted an affidavit detailing the funds received under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan scheme and their utilization. Upon reviewing the affidavit, the petitioners’ counsel expressed satisfaction with the State’s compliance but highlighted the continued absence of a science teacher at GMS Mon Town A.
The Additional Advocate General assured the court that a science teacher would be posted to the school once the teacher rationalization process was completed.
After considering the submissions, the bench, comprising Justice Kakheto Sema and Justice Budi Habung, disposed of the PIL with a directive to the State to appoint a qualified science teacher at GMS Mon Town A post-rationalization. The court acknowledged the State’s substantial compliance with the petitioners’ concerns and urged the government to continue addressing the infrastructure and staffing needs at the school.
