Mokokchung, October 25 (MTNews): Government High School Mangmetong in Mokokchung district is reaping the benefits of the Nagaland Education Project- The Lighthouse (NECTAR) project. The school now has two freshly painted and electrified classrooms, an ICT room with 24 hours electricity back up, proper drinking water supply, improved sanitation facilities, upgraded sports equipments and so on.
The Nagaland Education Project- The Lighthouse (NECTAR) which is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Department of School Education with the aim to improve and enhance quality education in the state.
An update from the school informed that, apart from improvements in infrastructure, the school has also conducted several capacity building programs and outreach works. The most recent of these were the Science Exposure Trip for the students of the school to Nagaland University which was undertaken on the 18th of October, the update said. Besides, it also said that a ‘Health Awareness And Medical Camp For The Elderly’ on the 24th of October and an outreach program titled “Career Development: Towards Purpose” for school dropouts and the educated unemployed on the 24th of October with Aoinla Pongen, Senior Manager NRMC (An Intellecap Subsidiary) and Er. T. Imlisunep, Principal ITI Mokokchung as its resource persons were held under the project.
“Ever since the allocation of funds from the Performance Incentive Grant (PIG), the SMDC of the school has been proactive in trying to realize the visions and objectives of the NECTAR project. The village community has also come up, time and again, with support to the school, be it financial or physical,” it added.
Taking the progress made by the school as an example, the update stated that it can be said that NECTAR, though it is current only at its initial phase, is on the right path to achieving its goals for improving and enhancing quality education as well as strengthening community engagement and participation in school management.
It further said that NECTAR is not only bringing about a much needed face lift to the infrastructure of existing government schools, but also improving community ownership and participation in the management of government schools and the schooling process.
