Hathkargha Mela – State Handloom Expo (SHE), commenced its much-anticipated showcase at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on Friday. Organized by the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Government of Nagaland, and sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the expo was inaugurated by A Temjem Jamir, Director of Industries and Commerce, Kohima, in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung and officials from Ao Senden.

Addressing the media after the inauguration, Director Jamir conveyed that the Mela was designed to be a significant state event, with 40 percent of the participants hailing from mainland India. He highlighted the expo’s role in providing a unique platform for artisans and craftsmen to showcase their talents and find markets for their artistry and handicrafts.

The special guest, emphasizing the expo’s significance, remarked that it was a privilege not only for the people of Mokokchung but also for those from other districts and mainland India. Stressing that these artifacts carry a piece of the community’s heritage, he also suggested the need to customize traditional products for marketing, advocating the preservation of traditional attires and handicraft items.

Director Jamir expressed gratitude to the Development Commissioner (Handloom) Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, for providing the opportunity to organize this state-level handloom expo. He highlighted the event’s objective of showcasing and celebrating the artistry of Nagaland’s skilled artisans.

Speaking on the role of the Ministry of Textiles, Director Jamir outlined its support for handicrafts and textiles units, offering entrepreneurs, craftspeople, and artisans opportunities to showcase and sell their products.

The expo features exhibits ranging from handicrafts, handlooms, home furnishings to Banasar carpets and rugs. Out of the 60 stalls, 40 participants represent Nagaland, while the remaining participants hail from Assam, UP, Jammu and Kashmir. The expo, which commenced on February 2, will run until February 15, 2024.
