A devastating fire engulfed the MMC Complex in Mokokchung on the night of February 3, marking a distressing incident unfolding in the heart of Mokokchung town.

Responding promptly to a call received around 9:25 PM, the Fire Brigade managed to arrive within a five-minute window from its North Station in Sungkomen Ward. However, the escalating intensity of the fire necessitated reinforcements, prompting the summoning of the Fire Brigade from the South station in PS 2, Marepkong, an official on the spot shared with Mokokchung Times.

Emergency response teams, including fire tenders and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), also swiftly arrived at the scene, attempting to combat the blaze. Water tankers from Assam Rifles, administration and the police were also mobilized to fetch water for the four fire engines.

According to the preliminary report as shared by the official with Mokokchung Times, the first floor (above ground floor) of the complex was entirely razed down. The affected establishments on this floor included a diverse mix of businesses, from clothing stores to hotels and salons. The official confirmed that no injuries were reported.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire still remained unknown, and a detailed report will be made available after the official investigation. Meanwhile, firefighting efforts persist, with fire tenders combating the flames.

The extent of damage to the complex, which houses commercial establishments on the lower floors and the MMC office on the top, remains unknown.

Representatives of the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), and All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) were also at the scene, as well as Thsuvisie Poji, Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung has called for an emergency meeting tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:00 PM to take stock of the situation. All apex CSOs and relevant authorities including the Ao Senden, Watsü Mungdang, AKM, AWUMT, MCCI, SDRF, police and others have been invited to the meeting.
