Hekani Jakhalu, MLA and Advisor for Industries and Commerce, Government of Nagaland, called on Naga youth to take charge of their future during the closing session of the 52nd Biennial General Conference of the All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) at Satoi Town.

Addressing hundreds of students, Jakhalu emphasized that hard work remains the key to success. “When educated youth describe themselves as jobless, it often reflects an attitude of laziness,” she said. She urged young people to explore private-sector opportunities and entrepreneurship, rather than rely solely on government support.

Jakhalu also highlighted the long-pending Naga political solution as a major obstacle to the state’s overall development. She noted that multiple taxation and the presence of several groups of “national workers” add to the burdens on youth, contributing to high unemployment. She called upon all stakeholders to unite for peace and development to secure a brighter future for Naga youth.

Pointing to opportunities both within India and abroad, Jakhalu said, “Many countries need manpower, and our youth must be ready to step out, learn, and compete.” She informed the gathering about a new initiative under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio, where the Nagaland government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan to provide youth exposure, work experience, and job placements overseas. She also noted that Japanese language courses have been introduced at Nagaland University to help youth prepare for these opportunities.

Emphasizing the rapid advancement of technology, Jakhalu urged students to acquire new skills and stay competitive in the age of artificial intelligence. She concluded by encouraging every attendee to return home with renewed focus and take responsibility in their communities.

The conference also featured a message from Dr Hutton Sümi, Pastor of Sümi Baptist Church, Zunheboto. Speaking in the morning service, Dr Sümi stressed the importance of combining education with diligence, integrity, and a strong work ethic. He highlighted the need to preserve the Sümi language, urging students, “If we lose our Sumi language, we lose our tribal identity.”

The closing ceremony featured musical performances by the District Band Zunheboto (DBZ) and the Sümi Music Forum. New office bearers for the 2026–2028 tenure were announced, with Hipito Achumi as President and P Samuel Chophy as General Secretary.
