The Department of Women Resource Development (DWRD), Government of Nagaland, hosted “Her Stories: Celebrating Women Narratives” at the Directorate premises in Bayavu Colony, Kohima, on December 6, 2025, bringing together established and emerging women writers as part of the Hornbill-cum-Myki Festival.

Addressing the gathering, DWRD Director Vilone Sakhrie said women writers in Nagaland continue to remain “active yet silent,” despite their contributions across fields such as sports, agriculture, music and literature. “The contributions, their activities, and so many other things go unnoticed,” he said, adding that literature remains one of the most neglected sectors in the state.
Sakhrie also noted the decline in reading physical books due to the rise of digital platforms. “We grew up reading actual books, but that is being lost,” he remarked, while pointing out that the state has not been able to extend sufficient support to local authors, particularly women.

Encouraging writers to adapt to digital trends, he urged literary groups and authors to explore e-book platforms, online publishing and sample chapters to reach wider audiences. “Maybe the hard copies don’t get sold, but you may still be able to earn something from online sales,” he said. He described the featured writings as the “voice of all our women,” and assured that DWRD would continue supporting literary initiatives “even if in a small way.”

A conversation titled “Women, Words and the World” followed, featuring authors Vishü Rita Krocha and Avinuo Kire in dialogue with moderator Vizovono Elizabeth. They shared their experiences, inspirations and journeys in contemporary literature.

The event also included a performance of “Rise Up” by Messilemla Chang and readings from Homegrown – Anthology of New Writings from Nagaland. The anthology features works by Sentinaro, Adenuo Shirat Luikham, Imlikokla Jamir, Elongshila Jamir, Vishü Rita Krocha, Avinuo Kire, Vizovono Elizabeth and Kemya Yanlem, showcasing the emerging landscape of Naga literature.

Delivering the closing remarks, chairperson of the event Sentinaro, Assistant Professor at Baptist College, Kohima, said the programme was a reminder that stories “are bridges, they are mirrors,” and that when women tell their stories, “they reshape the world.” She added, “When one woman speaks, many more discover their voices.”

Certificates of participation were presented to all participating authors by the Department of Women Resource Development.
