1) The government will be opposition-less. We all know that in a democracy a strong opposition is needed but without a strong opposition there will be no one in the assembly to check the government. Not only there aren’t any political parties to check the government but even the people have become toothless because in Nagaland, anyone pointing fingers at any of the ministers will be doing so at their own risk as they will be summoned by the minister’s tribesmen and forced to apologize. Nagaland has recently witnessed the mushrooming of few media houses. Will the fourth pillar of democracy in Nagaland stand up against corruption and misgovernance or will they follow the path of the national media houses who have sided with the ruling government?
2) Public has no right to complain if there is no progress and development because most of the votes were purchased. Naga public has once again shown in the recent concluded election that we are mad for money and we have no values and principles. Hundreds of crores were spent by the political candidates and parties. A large amount of this money were not raised legitly to fight the election but was stolen from funds meant for development of our state and dispersed among opportunists and sycophants to buy votes.
3) Who will benefit?
The elected politicians who were elected after so much communal tensions, killings, buying of votes, hatred and treachery will live like gods for the next 5 years. They will go around in expensive luxurious SUVs with elite bodyguards and will travel around the world and India as VIPs. They will be revered by the most important NGOs like the hohos, churches and student unions and people will shower them with the ultimate blessings and praises and regard them even higher than Jesus Christ. Their family, relatives and closest ones will be second in line to benefit followed by their sycophants and political opportunists who will eye for backdoor appointments in the state government and various small contracts.
4) Who is to blame if Nagaland doesn’t see good governance, substantial development and progress? Firstly we the people are to be blamed because we sold our votes. There are true stories about educated unemployed youths asking for 40k to lakhs for their votes instead of development in the recent election. There were even teachers who actively participated in malpractices during elections and even sold their votes. If our teachers can do that then our state is hopeless. People formed groups to demand lakhs of money for their votes from the candidates. Secondly, in rural areas, the citizen’s forum and village elders and members of the village council should be blamed. Instead of being righteous, they were the ones that destroyed the very spirit of democracy by forcing people to vote only for a particular candidate of their choice. There were instances where entire polling stations were captured by members of these institutions and intimation and violence were orchestrated by members of these august institutions. It will truly be a miracle if the newly formed government bring genuine development and progress to Nagaland. Once again the political solution has been thrown in the freezer and we might talk about it once again maybe in 2028.
