The 3rd Edition of the Women’s Champions Trophy witnessed a spectacular start, with the Zungki Slingers and Dhansiri Titans clinching victory in their opening matches, showcasing the skill and determination of the players.
In the first match at Sovima Cricket Ground, the Zungki Slingers dominated the Dikhu Strikers, securing a massive 120-run victory. Talirenla Pongen emerged as the standout player, scoring 91 runs and claiming 4 wickets, earning her the title of Player of the Match.
The Slingers set a formidable total of 249/8, with significant contributions from Priyanka Karmakar, who added 58 runs. Despite efforts from Jyoti Thapa (39) and Neikesonuo Belho (28), the Strikers were unable to chase down the target, collapsing at 129 all out.
The second match took place at Nagaland Cricket Stadium, where the Dhansiri Titans faced off against the Doyang Queens in a tightly contested battle. Alemienla led the Titans to a 4-wicket victory with a stellar all-round performance, scoring an unbeaten 59 runs and taking 3 wickets, which also secured her the Player of the Match award.
The Doyang Queens were bowled out for 118, with Radhika Mondal top-scoring with 39 runs. The Titans successfully chased down the target, with Alemienla’s commanding performance and Rwisumwi Basumatari’s supportive knock of 21 runs.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from May 15th to May 20th, 2024, at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium and Sovima Cricket Ground. Approximately 90 players from various districts have registered, organized into six teams. These teams are divided into two groups, competing for the prestigious trophy, with each team supervised by BCCI Level-1 qualified coaches throughout the tournament.
In a groundbreaking move, this third edition introduces the One-Day format for the first time, adding an exciting dimension to the tournament. The highlight will be the final match, played as a day and night fixture.
