The inaugural edition of the Hornbill Extension kicked off at the District Sports Council Ground in Zunheboto on December 5. Organized by the Sumi Youth Organization, the three-day event, themed “Celebrating Nagaland’s Rich Heritage,” attracted a large gathering of locals and dignitaries.
Dr Kekhrie Yhome, Advisor for School Education & SCERT, graced the occasion as the inaugural guest. In his address, he underscored the importance of preserving Nagaland’s traditions, customs, and cultural practices. While acknowledging that the Hornbill Festival was not celebrated by the forefathers of the Naga tribes, Yhome noted its evolution into a unifying event that bridges communities.
He urged the people of Zunheboto to establish a permanent venue for the festival, advocated for government support, and encouraged showcasing Nagaland’s rich cultural identity on a global stage. Yhome also emphasized that the Sumi tribe, as one of Nagaland’s major communities, should take pride in their heritage while promoting unity among tribes. He expressed optimism about the role of education and religion in uplifting the people of Nagaland.
The program, chaired by Tavinto K Sumi, President of the Green Club Zunheboto, began with an invocation by Ghunato Assumi, Associate Pastor of SBCZ. Vihoto Zhimo, Deputy Chairperson of Zunheboto Town Council, delivered the welcome address, extending greetings to the attendees.
One of the highlights was a speech by Akukau Hetoho S Zhimomi, President of Sumi Kukami Hoho, who thanked Hikavi H Kinimi, President of the Sumi Youth Organization, and the organizing team for their efforts. He also reminded stall owners to adhere to cultural norms during the festival.
The festival features a variety of cultural and traditional events, including the Sumi Indigenous Martial Art Sparring (Apukhu Kiti), Tug of War competitions, and performances by artists such as Mengu Suokhrie, Keneisenuo Sorhie, Nikato Tamang, Physco K4, and District Band Zunheboto. The evening sessions are hosted by Miss Nagaland 2022, Hikali Achumi, and Global Model India, Tonoto Zhimomi.
The inaugural program included a special number by The Living Voice and Kihikali Zhimo, as well as a presentation on Sumi Alokumusu Mqo by Kakugha S. Rotokha, Advisor of SAM. Cultural exhibitions featured performances such as a folk dance by Lumuthsami and traditional sparring events.
The Hornbill Extension festival also garnered support from various dignitaries, including Minister for Higher Education and Tourism, Government of Nagaland, Temjen Imna Along, former Minister Y Vikheho Swu, Additional Director of Tourism, T Kakihe Sumi, and others.
