Human Rights awareness program conducted in Wokha, Zunheboto, and Mokokchung districts

Mokokchung, 20 May (MTNews): An awareness program titled “Human Rights and the Role of the Human Rights Commission in its Better Protection” was held across various regions of Wokha, Zunheboto, and Mokokchung districts. The official tour began on May 13, 2024, led by the chairperson of the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC), Songkhupchung Serto, along with NSHRC member R. Nzanbemo Lotha and secretary Limanemla.

The campaign, which commenced in Wokha town, concluded on May 18, 2024, at Tuli College in Mokokchung. Here, students and representatives of various civil societies in Tuli were educated about the origins and duties of the commission, the definition of human rights, procedures for redressal against human rights infringements, and actions taken against such cases.

During their visit to Tuli, the Commission inspected the local police station, where Serto emphasized the importance of maintaining lock-up rooms humanely. The SDPO and Officer In-charge also highlighted other grievances faced by the police force.

The chairperson interacted with the staff of GHSS Tuli, discussing issues related to student enrollment, adequate teaching faculty, and resource availability. He stressed the necessity of introducing a science stream at the higher secondary level.

To raise awareness about inherent human rights such as the right to life and liberty, freedom from torture and inhumane treatment, the right to health, and the right to education, the Commission visited a total of two district hospitals, seven healthcare centers, a TB hospital in Mokokchung, four police stations, one district jail, and eight government educational institutions. These visits covered several locations including Wokha town, Englan, Yikhum village, Doyang, Chukitong range, Lumami, Mokokchung town, Kopulung, Mongsenyimti, Changtongya, and Tuli.
