India has officially ranked as the third most powerful nation in Asia, according to the annual Asia Power Index released by the Sydney-based Lowy Institute. This significant achievement comes on the heels of robust post-COVID-19 economic growth, allowing India to surpass Japan in the rankings.

The report, which evaluates the power dynamics in Asia, places the United States at the top with a score of 81.7, followed by China at 72.7. India recorded a score of 39.1, edging out Japan, which scored 38.9. Other countries included in the index are Australia at 31.9 and Russia at 31.1.

The 2024 Asia Power Index report highlights that India has enhanced its economic capability by 4.2 points, reflecting its strong recovery from the pandemic. The report also notes India’s performance across various resource measures, particularly in future resources, where its score has risen by an impressive 8.2 points. This upward trajectory suggests that India’s youthful population could provide a significant demographic dividend in the decades ahead, a stark contrast to many other Asian countries facing aging populations.
