The Khulazu Basa Students’ Union (KBSU) held its 68th general session and cultural day under the theme “Krütsazho thikeyhepü dorhükevelü sükeyi” at Government Primary School – A in Khulazu Basa Village, Phek district, on Friday.
Addressing the function, retired Assistant Director of the Social Welfare Department and Finance Secretary of the Chakhesang Public Organisation, Satahi Shüjo, highlighted the importance of preserving the rich cultural heritage and traditions.
He urged younger generations to learn stories, traditions, and culture from their elders. Emphasizing that such information is not readily available on the internet, he encouraged them to cherish the opportunity to hear these stories and traditions directly from those who had lived them.
The speaker also stressed the importance of documenting traditions and encouraged recording folk songs, stories, and traditional crafts to ensure their preservation for future generations.
Elders must teach the younger generation folk songs and the proper way to wear traditional clothing, as these practices are at risk of disappearing if not passed on, he added.
Earlier, KBSU President Kuzoto Keyho, KBSUK President Nühüta Tetseo, Senior Citizen Chairman Zühücho Rhakho, and Acting Village Council Chairman Züvehü Rhakho also addressed the gathering.
Several individuals were recognized for bringing laurels to the community in their respective fields. Awards were also presented to the “best” parents and teachers.
The Nerenyü Ngolüyi Kezo Award, which honors two students for outstanding academic performance in 2024, was presented to Rakhoyi Rhakho and Khrusalu Rhakho. Additionally, Anuvelu Yhosa from GPS A Khulazu Basa was recognized for securing a top 8 position in the Class 5 board examination under the SDEO Chozuba Circle for the academic year 2024.
The event also featured indigenous games such as fire-making, the Naga traditional dice game, tug of war, and war cry competitions.
