The Konyak Union has submitted a formal complaint to the Chief Secretary of Nagaland, expressing “deep concern regarding the recurrent and unwarranted interference” faced by travellers from Mon district while transiting through highways in Assam.
In the letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, Government of Nagaland, the Union stated that “innocent travellers including students, medical patients, and business persons” are being subjected to “intrusive questioning, indiscriminate checks,” and, in some instances, to “acts bordering on intimidation” by Assam Police personnel.
“These disruptive practices have caused immense inconvenience and psychological distress to the people of Mon District, who are heavily dependent on these transit routes for access to medical care, education, employment, business and other essential needs,” the Union noted.
Calling the actions of Assam Police a violation of the “ethos of inter-state harmony and goodwill,” the Konyak Union further asserted that the ongoing harassment “amounts to a breach of the fundamental rights of our citizens, particularly the right to free movement and dignity.”
The Union appealed to the Nagaland government to “intervene at the highest level and engage with the concerned authorities in Assam to ensure that these arbitrary and unjustified actions are brought to an immediate halt.”
As a proactive step, the Konyak Union also proposed the establishment of a “24X7 grievances redressal helpline number” to assist Mon-bound travellers who face such difficulties.
“We are confident that the Government of Nagaland will treat this issue with the seriousness of its merits and will take all appropriate steps to safeguard the rights and well-being of its people,” the Union stated.
