The Konyak Union (KU) has formally requested the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, to address inaccuracies in the Google mapping boundary lines between Mon District in Nagaland and Charaideo District in Assam. In a letter to the Chief Minister, the union expressed concern over the discrepancies, which they believe inaccurately extend Assam’s boundary deep into Mon District.

The white dotted lines close to Tizit Town Konyak Baptist Church, which is in the middle of Tzit town, is erroneously shown as the Nagaland-Assam boundary as per Google map, the Konyak Union said on Tuesday.

According to the Konyak Union, the current Google mapping shows the boundary line covering approximately 80-85% of Tizit Town, including key government buildings such as administrative offices, police stations, and public grounds, as being within Assam’s territory. The union further pointed out that this incorrect mapping also affects the villages of Hota-Hoti and Tekun, which have been part of Mon District since the 1960s.

The Konyak Union highlighted the historical context of the boundary, noting that Nagaland was officially created in December 1963 through a political agreement that bifurcated parts of Assam and incorporated territories from the Northeast Frontier Agency (NEFA), which was predominantly inhabited by Nagas.

They referenced historical records that indicate clear ancestral boundaries between the Ahoms of Assam and the Konyak Nagas of Mon District. Despite this, the official recognition of these boundaries remain unresolved and is currently under adjudication by the Supreme Court.

“The aforementioned areas viz, Tizit Town and the villages of Hota-Hoti and Tekun, fall entirely under Mon District, Nagaland. Therefore, the current misrepresentation on Google Map is not only misleading but may also lead to technical discrepancies in official documentation and potential confrontation between the parties,” it added.

The union urged the Chief Minister’s office to expedite the rectification and correction of these mapping inaccuracies with the concerned and responsible department.  The Konyak Union also cautioned that if the issue is not addressed promptly, they would not be held responsible for any eventualities arising from the misinterpretation and incorrect information on Google Maps.
