The Konyak Union (KU) has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups allegedly involved in extortion, intimidation, and other unlawful activities in Mon district, citing growing concerns over “rising disturbances and illegal extortions” affecting the public and business community.
In a statement released on Thursday, the union said it had received multiple complaints from residents and traders regarding “ever-mounting disturbances and illegal extortions” affecting businesses, suppliers and transporters ferrying goods from Assam into Mon.
The KU also highlighted reports of “forceful demands placed on village councils, including financial contributions, livestock, and percentage cuts from contractors executing government projects,” noting that such practices not only undermine public welfare but also “inflict lasting damage on the district’s economic growth.”
Warning that continued illegal activities would have consequences, the union said it would take “astringent action” and publicly disclose the identities of those involved if disturbances persist.
Reiterating its directives to armed factions, the KU called on leaders to ensure that members stop “loitering around armed or in uniform within Mon district,” describing such behavior as a source of fear and insecurity among citizens. It stressed that these acts are “detrimental in nature, hampering economic growth and entrepreneurship in the region,” and are no longer tolerable.
The statement further expressed hope that “collective Naga leaders share a common vision of peace and development,” lamenting that factional activities have overshadowed progress in the district. The union likened the impact of these disruptions to “parasites that pull the nerves and bite the flesh of the people.”
Affirming its support to law enforcement, the KU endorsed police and security agencies to take necessary action against offenders “in accordance with the law of the land.”
