Polling for the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency by-election will be held on Thursday, with authorities stating that arrangements and security measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth voting process.
According to the Election Commission, polling will be conducted from 7 am to 6 pm across 30 polling stations in the constituency. Of these, 13 have been identified as vulnerable and 17 as critical, while two polling stations will be managed entirely by women staff.
The constituency has over 22,000 electors, with a near-even distribution of male and female voters.
Security has been significantly stepped up across the constituency following incidents of pre-poll violence.
The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung, has been directed to make necessary arrangements for the arrest and transportation of violators to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process.
The Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer reiterated that strict enforcement measures are aimed at enabling voters to exercise their franchise “without fear, favour or undue pressure” in the constituency.
Campaigning for the by-election concluded on Tuesday amid a tense atmosphere. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L Imchen on November 11 last year. Six candidates are in the fray. The BJP has fielded Daochier I Imchen, son of the late legislator. The Congress candidate is T Chalukumba Ao, while the National People’s Party has nominated I Abenjang. The Independent candidates are Imchatoba Imchen, Imtiwapang, and Toshikaba.
