Labourers working on the ongoing metalling road project between Sitimi and Seyochung HQ are facing deplorable working conditions, with a lack of basic facilities and hazardous environments, according to a statement from Seyochung Village Students’ Union (SVSU).
According to SVSU, it has been observed that workers at the site do not have access to essential amenities such as safe drinking water, sanitation, and adequate shelter, creating an unsafe and unhealthy working environment. Additionally, safety measures are reportedly absent, leaving labourers vulnerable to workplace hazards. The site’s extreme dust levels also pose significant health risks, particularly respiratory issues, due to prolonged exposure without proper protective equipment.
On March 17, the Seyochung Village Students’ Union (SVSU) visited the project site and expressed deep concern over the distressing conditions in which the workers are forced to operate. The union has called for urgent intervention to improve labour welfare.
Concerned parties have urged the Assistant Labour, Kiphire to conduct an inspection of the site, ensure the provision of basic amenities, and implement proper safety protocols, including dust control measures and personal protective equipment for workers.
