Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices are set to rise by Rs 50 per cylinder starting tomorrow, Tuesday, April 8, 2025, India’s Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced during a press conference.
According to the announcement, LPG prices for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries will increase from Rs 500 to Rs 550 per cylinder, while non-beneficiaries will see the price rise from Rs 803 to Rs 853. Minister Puri added that the ministry will review the price adjustment as it progresses.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a government initiative aimed at providing clean cooking fuel, particularly LPG, to women from Below-Poverty-Line (BPL) households in rural India.
In addition to the LPG price hike, the government has also raised the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 each. According to a report by Mint on April 7, the excise duty will rise to Rs 13 for petrol and Rs 10 for diesel, effective from April 8, 2025.
Clarifying concerns, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas assured that the hike in excise duty would not affect retail prices for consumers. “Therefore, the excise duty that you have seen increase is not to go on to the consumer on petrol and diesel. That excise increase is intended to compensate the oil marketing companies for Rs 43,000 crore that they have incurred as a loss on the gas part of it,” Puri explained.
The move comes as international crude oil prices have dropped to around $60 per barrel. Experts cited by PTI noted that the rise in excise duty is expected to be absorbed against the reduction in petrol and diesel prices, ensuring that consumers do not bear the burden.
“Let me clarify upfront on the record, this will not be passed on to the consumer,” Puri stressed, underlining that despite the duty hike, petrol and diesel prices at the pump would remain unaffected.
