Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Tuesday summoned the 4th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly (MLA) on 29 August 29, likely avoiding a constitutional crisis. The monsoon session will begin at 11 AM.

Earlier, the state cabinet had recommended the Governor to summon the monsoon session on 21 August. However, the anticipated session of the 60-member MLA failed to take place on Monday as the Governor did not give her consent despite the cabinet’s recommendation.

The last session of MLA was held in March and was adjourned sine die on 3 March, more than a month before the ethnic clash broke out on 3 May.

Amid the ongoing crisis, various CSOs in valley areas as well as the opposition parties have been demanding a special session to discuss the ongoing turmoil in the state.

However, the tribal body Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum in Manipur has warned all the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs in the state not to attend the special session of the Assembly.
