The Goods and Services Tax (GST) has established itself as the primary revenue source for 23 Indian states between April and November 2024, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25 released on Friday, January 31, 2025.
Manipur and Nagaland are the two states with the highest dependence on GST, with GST contributing 78% of revenue in Manipur and 72% in Nagaland. These figures underscore the growing reliance on GST in these regions for fiscal sustenance.
In contrast, other states such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal saw substantial contributions from different revenue streams. Maharashtra led the pack in stamps and registration revenue, Tamil Nadu stood out for sales tax contributions, while West Bengal excelled in state excise duties.
The survey also highlighted Odisha’s performance, noting that it recorded the highest share of non-tax revenue in its overall resource receipts (ORR), which amounted to 49%.
