Imphal, 27 March (MTNews): To ensure smooth functioning of government offices in the state of Manipur, Governor Anusuiya Uikey has declared 30 and 31 March 2024, which falls on Saturday and Sunday respectively, as working days. This decision, outlined in an order, comes amidst preparations for the final days of the Financial Year 2023-24.

The directive, issued under the official order number LIB-101/1/2022-GAD-GAD-Part(1) by the Governor’s Secretariat, emphasized the importance of maintaining operational continuity across all government offices, including Public Sector Undertakings, Corporations, Autonomous Bodies, and Societies under the State Government of Manipur.

Highlighting the significance of this decision, the Deputy Secretary (GAD) stressed the importance of sustaining administrative functions during this critical period. Notably, the declaration of 31 March as a working day holds particular relevance as it coincides with Easter Sunday, a significant religious observance for Christians.

This has drawn sharp criticism from Poumai Naga Tsiidoumai Me (PNTM) stating that it exhibits “blatant negligence towards the Christian community” particularly during a time when Christians worldwide are observing the sacred Easter celebration.

The PNTM said the government’s disregard for such significant religious observance as “unacceptable” calling the government’s move “feeble and biased”.

“It is imperative for the government to understand that governance entail respecting and accommodating diverse religious beliefs of its citizens, not just at the convenience of one section,” stated the PNTM.
