Following the destructive fire that swept through the MMC Complex in Mokokchung town on 3 February 2024, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has expressed its deepest sorrow and concern to the affected traders and conveyed unwavering solidarity with its members who have faced losses.

In a press release, MCCI said it stands in solidarity with the impacted traders, who are members of the chamber, and that it has recognized the profound impact this incident has had on their businesses and livelihoods.

The chamber has assured its members of steadfast support during the recovery process. It said that the fire resulted in the “complete destruction of approximately 78 businesses on the first floor of the complex,” adding that the remaining shops in the complex have been “adversely affected by heat and smoke, rendering their products unsaleable.” While no injuries were reported, the financial losses are likely to be enormous, it added.

Pending the official investigation report on the fire’s cause, the MCCI demanded “fair and expeditious compensation for the aggrieved traders to help them rebuild their businesses and lives.”

The chamber further emphasized the need for a collaborative effort involving all stakeholders, including the government and relevant agencies, to ensure a swift recovery for the affected businesses and their hardworking members.

The MCCI also acknowledged and commended the rapid and courageous efforts of various entities, including the district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), firefighters, police, Assam Rifles, and public volunteers, who actively participated in extinguishing the fire.

“Their swift response undoubtedly prevented further escalation of the tragedy and showcased exceptional teamwork during this challenging time,” MCCI said.

The MCCI also appealed to the government to take all necessary steps to alleviate the suffering of the affected traders and help them rebuild their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, commending the Deputy Commissioner’s proactive approach in convening an emergency meeting to assess the situation and chart a path forward, the MCCI has urged the authorities to consider the following key actions:

Conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and make the findings public.

Swiftly provide immediate relief and financial assistance to the affected traders.

Work with MCCI and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive compensation plan ensuring fair and timely reimbursement for losses incurred.

Prioritize and initiate immediate rehabilitation measures for the affected traders, including temporary relocation assistance, financial aid, and streamlined processes for obtaining necessary permits and licenses.

Implement stringent fire safety measures across the district to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
